Welcome to Eastport Arts Center
This Sunday Afternoon at EAC
The Eastport Arts Center presents "Passamaquoddy Basketmaking with Gabriel Frey" on Sunday April 21st at 3pm as part of the Sunday Afternoon at the Arts Center series. Gabriel Frey is a 12th generation basketmaker, and he learned the craft from his grandfather. He and his family have received awards for their exceptional basketmaking. During his presentation he will demonstrate the entire basketmaking process with real raw materials, including an ash pounding demonstration. He hopes to show not just how to make baskets, but how to make the things that make baskets. His presentation will be highly interactive, with ample time for Q and A. This even is free and open to the public, though donations are encouraged to pay for heating and lighting the building.
We nurture the arts within an arts-interactive, collaborative environment.

The EAC nurtures and promotes seven year-round constituent groups engaged in theater, art, music, film, education and community outreach. Our official mission is: "To stimulate and nurture an appreciation of the visual and performing arts and the creative process, and to provide a home and an environment within the community where they can prosper."
In 1985, a small group of local artists opened the Eastport Gallery, a non-profit co-operative on Water Street, which offered occasional concerts and films. Stage East community theater group began in 1990, that same year, the non-profit umbrella organization the Eastport Arts Center (EAC) was formed. The Arts Center now includes seven constituent members: In late 2004, Eastport Arts Center purchased the Washington Street Baptist Church, built in 1837. With two floors and almost 9,200 square feet, there is downstairs space perfect for performances, functions, exhibitions and meetings. In the accessible upstairs, an auditorium, equipped with 106 seats, provides a stage and professional lighting. The building provides a home where the constituent groups and community arts activities can thrive and grow. The Eastport Arts Center has become an environment rich with creativity, artists, and those who appreciate and support the arts. |

Capital Building Fund
The 1837 building which houses the Eastport Arts Center was an impressive building. But with age, on-going renovations are required. In 2010, gallery and performance space was added on the first floor and attic insulation was added. A multi-phase renovation project was begun in 2011. Aided by a generous grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation major work has been completed on the three-plus story south wall of the building. The original foundation of the south wall was stacked rocks: the rocks were removed and a new foundation put into place. After scaffolding was put into place, all of the wood siding and trim was removed. At the same time any rotten sheathing was replaced. The siding was replaced with a pre-painted cement board product made to last fifty years. In addition, four windows were eliminated because they were obsolete, and the three remaining and used windows replaced with an energy efficient double hung vairety.
Phase three of the renovations includes: Main Space & Lobby Lighting Plan Staff office - main space New storage shed for Stage East Lobby ticket area Additional renovations will include a new kitchen to increase the use of the building to the public for receptions and other events. |
