February 5: Poetry Reading with Valerie Lawson & Michael Brown
Performance poetry is a theatrical event where the poets emphasize good poetry directed at the audience. In poetry slams poets perform their own work in competition for prizes and sometimes fame. In their show at the EAC, Michael and Valerie will read some work about Maine and perform in non-stop fashion for part of their program. They will also leave time for discussion.
Valerie Lawson’s work has been published in Main Street Rag, BigCityLites, Sensations Magazine, and others; in anthologies, and on websites. Lawson’s first book, Dog Watch, from Ragged Sky Press, was released in 2007. Twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize, Lawson won awards for Best Narrative Poem and Spoken Word at the Cambridge Poetry Awards. In 2008 Lawson was invited as a Legacy Poet to the first Women of the World Poetry Slam in Detroit. Lawson co-edits Off the Coast literary journal with her partner, Michael Brown.
Michael R. Brown, author of four books of poetry, founded the Boston Poetry Slam and ran the first slam in Stockholm, Sweden. He has performed his poetry from Vancouver to Jerusalem and Glasgow to San Diego. As co-director of an exchange of poets and artists under the UN mandate for a Decade of Peace, he promoted shows in Dublin, Ireland and throughout New England. His poetry theater ensemble performs two-hour poetry shows, each one unique in its structure.
