Eastport Gallery, 74 Water Street
History of the Eastport Gallery
In 1985 a group of eight artists living in the area opened the Eastport Gallery on Water Street as a cooperative, non-profit gallery. The artists renovated a space in a downtown building in lieu of rent and the following year added five more artists to the cooperative. The Gallery began to offer a few concerts, films, and poetry readings to draw community members into the gallery space.
As a way to support art education in the public schools, the Eastport Gallery mounted spring shows of art work created by the county’s High School art programs. During the next few years, the Gallery’s membership and contribution to the cultural life of the community continued to grow. In 1990 a 501c3 umbrella organization was formed, named the Eastport Arts Center, of which the Gallery became a part. The Eastport Arts Center soon adopted many of the programs that the Gallery had fostered throughout the years.
The Eastport Gallery is located on Water Street and has continued to thrive and now shows the work of 30 member artists representing a wide range of styles of high quality. They are looking forward to celebrating twenty five years of existence in 2010 and are pleased to have fostered, and are now a part of, the artistic renaissance that is taking place in Eastport.
